Alsobrook's Allstars
In The House of Dies Drear, Thomas Small and his family sang "Go Down Moses" when they attended
church. We learned that the songs of the Underground Railroad were sung to help slaves escape to
freedom. These songs had hidden messages, giving the slaves clues for their escape. Here are a few
that we enjoyed singing in class. Can you find the clues?

         Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

         Chorus:
         Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!

I looked over Jordan and what did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home!
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home!

         Chorus

If you get there before I do,
Comin' for to carry me home,
Jess tell my friends that I'm acomin' too,
Comin' for to carry me home.

         Chorus

I'm sometimes up and sometimes down,
Comin' for to carry me home,
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Comin' for to carry me home!
         Wade in the Water

         Chorus:
Wade in the water, wade in the water children.
Wade in the water, God’s gonna trouble the water.

Who’s all those children all dressed in Red?
         God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the ones that Moses led.
         God’s gonna trouble the water.

         Chorus:

What are those children all dressed in White?
         God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the ones of the Israelites.
         God’s gonna trouble the water.

        Chorus:

Who are these children all dressed in Blue?
         God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the ones that made it through.
         God’s gonna trouble the water.
         Follow the Drinking Gourd

         Chorus:
         Follow the Drinking Gourd,
         Follow the Drinking Gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting
for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd

When the Sun comes back and the first quail calls
         Follow the Drinking Gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd

The riverbank makes a very good road.
The dead trees will show you the way.
Left foot, peg foot, travelling on,
         Follow the Drinking Gourd.

The river ends between two hills
         Follow the Drinking Gourd.
There’s another river on the other side
         Follow the Drinking Gourd.

When the great big river meets the little river
         Follow the Drinking Gourd.
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd.
         Go Down, Moses

When Israel was in Egypt's Land,
Let my people go,
Opressed so hard they could not stand,
Let my people go. Chorus: Go down, Moses, Way down in Egypt's Land. Tell ol' Pharoah, Let my people go
No more shall they in bondage toil,
         Let my people go,
Let them come out with Egypt's spoil,
         Let my people go.

        Chorus
The Lord told Moses what to do,
         Let my people go,
To lead the Hebrew children through,
         Let my people go.

        Chorus
When they reached the other shore,
         Let my people go,
They sang a song of triumph o'er,
         Let my people go.

        Chorus
We need not always weep and mourn,
         Let my people go,
And wear these slavery chains forlorn,
         Let my people go.
